Mathematics
Students at Our Lady Star of the Sea are engaged in a range of learning experiences that will develop skills, understandings and confidence to be successful with Mathematics today and in the future. Teachers understand the importance of Mathematics being purposeful and relevant to everyday life.
At Our Lady Star of the Sea, students explore, engage in and develop important mathematical concepts, knowledge and skills that they will draw on in their lives. We are directed by the Victorian Curriculum Version 2 and MACS Vision for Instruction statement.
Using curriculum aligned and evidenced based resources, we focus on developing mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, modelling and problem solving to enable students to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently.
Mathematical concepts are explored through differentiated learning experiences to cater for and target individual learning needs, abilities and interests. We acknowledge the importance of explicit teaching, independent activities, open ended and investigative tasks. We instil an environment that promotes a gradual release model, includes collaborative learning and provides challenges, thus enabling and extending student learning.
Mathematics is integrated into other learning areas, helping students develop valuable mathematical and numeracy skills applicable for everyday life.
Students are provided with a range of task types, including open-ended tasks and personal investigations, where they are able to experience success.
Students are challenged in their Mathematical thinking. By learning through games, daily reviews, concrete materials, hands-on activities and technology, students are encouraged to pursue their personalised investigations whilst enjoying their experiences and learning in Mathematics.
