Year 6 Student Leadership
At Our Lady Star of the Sea we encourage and value student leadership. This is especially so with our senior students.
Late in the year, our Year 5 students engage in an off-site leadership program, concentrating on character traits, growing a positive mindset and demonstrating a “can do” attitude. Discussions and activities relate to discovering a leadership role that best suits their individual talents and character strengths. At the beginning of each school year, leadership speeches are prepared and delivered and leadership badges are presented at a whole school Assembly, acknowledging the new leaders of the year.
The Leadership roles are:
- Flag Bearers
- House Leaders
- Visual Arts Leaders
- Language Leaders
- Performing Arts Leaders
- Respectful Relationships & Social Justice Leaders
- Fire Carriers
- Media & Technology Leaders
- School Leaders
- Library Leaders:
- Sustainability Leaders:
- Safety Club / Travel Smart Leaders
To ensure an authentic student voice, the Year 6 leaders participate in fortnightly “Take Charge” sessions, pursuing interests and activities that specifically aim at improving and adding to our school environment through the leadership avenues. Our Year 6 leaders promote, encourage and facilitate student led activities. They demonstrate the outstanding character strengths that they bring when planning and executing their activities.
Examples of a few leadership roles in action are:
– House Leaders be involved in promoting school wide sporting events,
– Languages Leaders leading Indonesian activities,
– Fire Carriers participating in Reconciliation initiatives like Harmony Day and NAIDOC Week
– Visual Arts Leaders developing visual exhibitions for the school
– School Leaders conducting Tours and representing the school in the community
– Media leaders reporting and publishing electronically special events and promoting the great things happening in our learning community.
